With the album I Often Dream of Trains, Robyn Hitchcock emerged from what has been described as an artistic slump. Norfolk Southern (NSC) has surged today after handily beating earnings, despite coal’s never-ending slump.
Reuters C’est ne pas une Norfolk Southern train.Bloomberg has the details:
Net incomejumped 20 percent to $482 million, or $1.53 a share, from $402 million, or $1.24 a year earlier, the Norfolk, Virginia-based company said today in a statement. That topped the average estimateof $1.39 from 26 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
The increase in so-called merchandise shipping helped Norfolk Southern weather a drop in coal volumes, which have been under pressure as utilities switch to cheaper natural gas. Sand is used by oil and gas explorers for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to tap deposits that were previously out of reach.

Anemia on the rise
Although IBM (NYSE: IBM ) managed to satisfy investors by upping its full-year earnings guidance, Big Blue reported a year-over-year revenue decline of 3.3% to $24.9 billion, which translated to a net income decline of 16.9% in the second quarter. After adjusting for currency fluctuations, IBM's revenue would have only declined by 1%. As far as earnings guidance is concerned, the company raised its full-year outlook by $0.20 a share to $16.90, above the analyst consensus of $16.64 a share. According IBM CFO Mark Loughridge, the guidance bump can be attributed to a combination of cost-cutting, "solid" growth prospects, and potential tax settlements. To me, the boost is likely driven more on efficient maneuvering than it is on driving aggregate top-line revenue growth. - [By Dan Caplinger]
IBM (NYSE: IBM ) has posted a weaker climb of 2.7%, but given its dominance of the Dow, it actually had a greater positive impact on the average than UnitedHealth. Ahead of IBM's quarterly report, many investors had feared that a slowdown in IT consulting activity reported by IBM competitors would hurt Big Blue's results, and that trend played a role in the company's 17% drop in earnings on about 3% lower revenue. But the company managed to improve its margins by more than a full percentage point, making the most of its waning revenue. Moreover, raising its guidance for full-year operating earnings by $0.20 per share helped make IBM investors more enthusiastic about the prospects for the company's big-data efforts and other growth initiatives.
