Finally, a Stock Market Trading Day the Bears Can Cheer About

Top Services Stocks To Buy For 2015

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The markets finally had some selling on Wednesday as all the major indexes finished in the red. The DJIA was down 102.04 points to close at 16843.88 and the S&P 500 was down 6.90 at 1943.89. The Nasdaq finished down 6.06 at 4331.93 and the Russell 2000 closed at 1166.71 down 6 points.

The last hour of trading pushed the volume in the S&P 500 Trust Series ETF (SPY) slightly higher than the previous two days of trading. But once again the volume is well below its three-month average.

The technology stocks received the money rotation from the hedge funds on Wednesday. Specifically, the social media stocks and the semiconductor stocks where the standouts to the upside.

The Global X Social Media Index ETF (SOCL) was up over 1% on Wednesday. That ETF is well into overbought territory according to my internal algorithm signals which can be found at www.strategicstocktrades.com. The Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) finished higher for the 15th consecutive day. This SMH is now extraordinarily overbought with a 100 number, according to my process. The number cannot go any higher. Are all the hedge funds long that exchange-traded fund? I sure hope so. This is an unprecedented number, never having been here before. I started a short position in the SMH at the close of trading. A 100 number means it is just a matter of time before it heads down. So the question begs to be asked: Do we continue down from these levels in the market or do we just turn around and head higher on Thursday? I do not know the answer but the tech sector and the semiconductors are signaling to me that we should head lower. The Nasdaq index is now the only index that is still in overbought territory with a 95.60 number. That tells me it should continue lower. On a different note, the housing sector, specifically the first-time home buyer market, seems to have no recovery at all. The one main reason for this is the massive amount of student loan debt in this country. Currently, the federally backed student loan figure is $775 billion, up $112 billion in the last 12 months. If we go back to 2009 that figure is up seven times, from over $100 billion. That is the reason there seems to be no recovery in the housing sector. In sum, this stock market was down today but could have been much worse if not for the semiconductor and social media stocks. I continue to be extremely cautious in my trading. I fully expect the social media and semis to rollover very soon and take the Nasdaq with it to the downside. At the close of trading, I covered most of my Broadcom (BRCM) short position early on in trading and added to my long position in the Direxion Daily Semiconductor 3 (SOXS). I added a new short position in the Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH).   At the time of publication the author was short BRCM and SMH and long SOXS. 5 Best Blue Chip Stocks To Buy For 2014

It wasn't exactly Godzilla attacking, but the Japanese Nikkei (NIKKEIINDICES: ^NI225  ) index fell a whopping 7.3% today, taking U.S. markets down with it in the morning. Major European indexes were all down more than 2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) fell nearly 1% this morning. The blue chips battled back, however, to finish just 0.1% lower.

The cause of the Nikkei crash seemed to be a weak manufacturing report from China, and concerns that the Federal Reserve could cut its Quantitative Easing program. The manufacturing report in question was the Chinese purchasing managers' index, which showed its first contraction in seven months, at 49.6, after a reading of 50.4 last month. Economists had expected a figure of 80.3. The Nikkei had also gained 80% in the last seven months, riding the worldwide bull market, so the correction needs to be viewed in that context. Many pundits have expected the stock-buying fever to break, which the Nikkei's crash may be evidence of, but the Dow's resilience today seems to be a sign that American markets are stable, and not inflated.

As it happens, probably the biggest contributor to growth's troubles is Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) . With declines of 15% so far this year despite its big rebound more recently, Apple has a huge weighting of about 5.7% as a pure growth stock. In fact, it's the only stock in growth ETF's top 25 holdings that has posted declines for 2013.

Relative to its peers and sector, Apple has been a weak year-to-date performer. WAIT AND SEE what Apple does in the coming weeks.

y own preference -- and you knew this was coming -- is our third category: investment in productive assets, whether businesses, farms, or real estate. Ideally, these assets should have the ability in inflationary times to deliver output that will retain its purchasing-power value while requiring a minimum of new capital investment. Farms, real estate, and many businesses such as Coca-Cola (KO), IBM (IBM), and our own See's Candy meet that double-barreled test. Certain other companies -- think of our regulated utilities, for example -- fail it because inflation places heavy capital requirements on them. To earn more, their owners must invest more. Even so, these investments will remain superior to nonproductive or currency-based assets./p>

"Bitcoins" either sound like a futuristic, implantable, laser-guided and rocket-pack equipped form of money, or the latest coin-shaped chocolate snack. In reality, it's probably a bit of both. The bitcoin, a digital currency, started the year worth about $15. Less than four months later, one bitcoin now trades above $70. While this past performance may be enticing and a sign of its legitimacy as a future currency, the bitcoin market is full of risks -- risks that may make bitcoins worth as much as a foil-wrapped piece of sugar. Bitcoin: A Crypto-Currency Bitcoin is based around the idea of a currency created and transacted through cryptography instead of issued and tracked through a central bank. And to add to its mystique, the creator of bitcoin only goes by a pseudonym and has never been positively identified. Instead of any legal authority, bitcoin transactions are verified through peer-to-peer interactions. If a user sends bitcoins to another user's "wallet" file, that transaction is verified through other users, and is written into the collective transaction log. And given the ease of transactions, any fees for transfers are minimal. Instead of a mint, bitcoins are created through a process called "mining," where computers attempt to solve for a certain number, and once found, are rewarded with new bitcoins. The rewards decrease with time, however, and there will only ever be about 21 million bitcoins created, three-quarters of which by 2016, and all by 2140. Even if you don't understand any of the above, the recent jump in valuation probably still has your interest. But there are plenty of reasons to continue to educate yourself before attempting to trade in bitcoins.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Weighing Machine]

Domiciled in Sweden, Assa Abloy (ASAZY.PK) is the largest lock maker in the world with a global market share of nearly 12%. While the construction market has been difficult since the financial crisis, Assa has continued to increase revenue and operating profit every year since 2010 and is on track to do so again in 2013. While commercial construction has been subdued, the aftermarket (which represents ~70% of the total lock market) is driven by changes in tenancy, renovation, and extensions have not been very cyclical and provides the company with a steady stream of profits. Assa has been cobbled together through 150+ acquisitions since the early 1990s and while management has done a good job of rationalizing facilities, there remain opportunities to increase manufacturing efficiencies. Similarly, the company's back office is still running dozens of IT systems (as a result of acquisitions) but management plans to consolidate these over the next few years. Further, Assa remains an active consolidator of the locks industry - it should be able to add 5% per year to sales via acquisitions (as an aside, those interested in micro-caps should have a look at Securidev in France which trades at less than half the private market value Assa has paid for lock makers on average over the past decade). Having the highest margins in the industry, Assa is able to achieve significant synergies on acquired businesses and earn good returns on capital for its shareholders through M&A. Thus even in a difficult economy, we expect Assa will continue to grow its operating profit given its steady after market revenue, opportunity to improve results through cost cutting, and through value accretive M&A. While its shares are not cheap, at 19x earnings, shares could offer investors with a five year holding period and an 8-10% annualized return.

Best Cheap Companies To Buy For 2014

With the album I Often Dream of Trains, Robyn Hitchcock emerged from what has been described as an artistic slump. Norfolk Southern (NSC) has surged today after handily beating earnings, despite coal’s never-ending slump.

Reuters C’est ne pas une Norfolk Southern train.

Bloomberg has the details:

Net incomejumped 20 percent to $482 million, or $1.53 a share, from $402 million, or $1.24 a year earlier, the Norfolk, Virginia-based company said today in a statement. That topped the average estimateof $1.39 from 26 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

The increase in so-called merchandise shipping helped Norfolk Southern weather a drop in coal volumes, which have been under pressure as utilities switch to cheaper natural gas. Sand is used by oil and gas explorers for hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to tap deposits that were previously out of reach.

    Anemia on the rise
Although IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) managed to satisfy investors by upping its full-year earnings guidance, Big Blue reported a year-over-year revenue decline of 3.3% to $24.9 billion, which translated to a net income decline of 16.9% in the second quarter. After adjusting for currency fluctuations, IBM's revenue would have only declined by 1%. As far as earnings guidance is concerned, the company raised its full-year outlook by $0.20 a share to $16.90, above the analyst consensus of $16.64 a share. According IBM CFO Mark Loughridge, the guidance bump can be attributed to a combination of cost-cutting, "solid" growth prospects, and potential tax settlements. To me, the boost is likely driven more on efficient maneuvering than it is on driving aggregate top-line revenue growth.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) has posted a weaker climb of 2.7%, but given its dominance of the Dow, it actually had a greater positive impact on the average than UnitedHealth. Ahead of IBM's quarterly report, many investors had feared that a slowdown in IT consulting activity reported by IBM competitors would hurt Big Blue's results, and that trend played a role in the company's 17% drop in earnings on about 3% lower revenue. But the company managed to improve its margins by more than a full percentage point, making the most of its waning revenue. Moreover, raising its guidance for full-year operating earnings by $0.20 per share helped make IBM investors more enthusiastic about the prospects for the company's big-data efforts and other growth initiatives.

Commercial landlord Boston Properties (BXP) is enjoying a solid run in 2014. Since the start of the year, shares of the $17.6 billion REIT have rallied more than 14.5%. And with the commercial real estate market looking strong this year, there's reason to expect a lot more upside in this high-quality trust. Funds picked up 804,650 shares of BXP in the most recent quarter, a $92 million buying spree at current share prices.

Boston Properties owns interests in more than 160 properties spread across the country, with a focus on office buildings in large metropolitan areas. In addition, the firm owns a hotel, three residential properties and another four retail spaces. BXP's properties are mostly concentrated in just five markets: Boston, New York, Princeton, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Location is everything, and that's the approach BXP has used to pursue high-quality properties in prime locations that continue to enjoy strong demand for leases.

BXP has historically been more tactical than most of its peers, selling off buildings when markets get frothy and buying again when prices drop. That approach is a bit more hazardous than the typical "own it forever" approach to real estate that most REITs follow, but Boston Properties has frankly been able to walk the line very effectively. Today, BXP's 65-cent quarterly dividend adds up to a 2.26% yield.

Margins matter. The more H&E Equipment Services (Nasdaq: HEES  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong H&E Equipment Services's competitive position could be.
